The Secret of My Success is directed by Dan Knechtges and features catchy upbeat pop tunes, wonderful performances, and a comedic heartfelt message.

The 1987 film that the play is based on currently sits at a non-impressive 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, which might raise an eyebrow as to why this polarizing film was sought after as source material for a hit Broadway musical. Fortunately, several common responses to the show have been positive and mention that it outshines the original film. As someone who has not seen the movie, I had a very fun time seeing this musical at The Hobby Center here in Houston, TX on October 27, 2022.

Brantley Foster (Ben Fankhauser) moves to New York City but is working an undesirable temporary job. The play focuses on his rise to success (in an outlandish unconventional manner) and his love interest in top financial executive, Christy Lockhart (Ashley Blanchett)

Written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen; this musical is absolutely hilarious! There’s so many clever lines of dialogue that had the audience and myself laughing consistently. Additionally, the plot evolves at a steady pace. Production design is remarkable- there’s multiple borders of LED lights, a video changing backdrop, and a bridge that goes across the stage. The plot is a bit farfetched and unrealistically hokey but if you buy into the outrageous premise there's much clever humor to appreciate.

This Broadway premiered in 2020 at The Paramount theater in Aurora, Illinois and was scheduled to run February 21 – March 29 but due to the pandemic was halted on March 13th of that year. Fast-forward to 2022, The Secret of My Success is now getting its regional premiere.
