The Nutcracker, Houston Ballet
The Houston Ballet’s The Nutcracker is a family-friendly holiday classic that delights audiences of all ages. From the moment you enter the theater, the festive atmosphere is undeniable. The lobby is brimming with Nutcracker-themed merchandise, including ornaments, dolls, and, of course, nutcrackers, offering a keepsake for everyone. I personally picked up a stylish Houston Ballet tumbler—a perfect souvenir!
This production draws in more children than a typical ballet, as it is a staple of the company’s repertoire and a perfect introduction to ballet for younger audiences. Families with children will appreciate the simple, accessible story. However, I recommend reading the plot beforehand or explaining it to young kids since the ballet features no dialogue. Doing so ensures that everyone can follow along and fully enjoy the experience.
The live orchestra, conducted by Geneviève Leclair, breathes life into Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, which has undeniably stood the test of time. Many of the tracks are instantly recognizable—even if you don’t know their origin, you’ve likely heard them in holiday movies or commercials. The music is arguably the strongest aspect of the production, offering a timeless soundtrack that could captivate audiences on its own, even without the stunning visuals on stage.
The production value is equally remarkable. The sets are grand and intricate, with moving pieces that add depth and wonder to the stage. The costumes fit perfectly into the magical world of Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Nutcracker Prince. It’s clear that significant resources have been devoted to making this show a visual and auditory masterpiece, which isn’t surprising, given that The Nutcracker is the financial backbone of most ballet companies.
While the story’s simplicity makes it perfect for families, it may feel a bit light for those who prefer more complex narratives. The entire second act, for instance, is essentially a celebration of the events of Act I, showcasing a variety of dazzling dances from different cultures. Though beautiful, this structure leans more on spectacle than storytelling.
Despite this, The Nutcracker is a holiday must-see for its ability to transport audiences into a world of whimsy and wonder. It’s a chance to marvel at extraordinary performances, immerse yourself in one of the most beloved scores in history, and share a magical evening with loved ones.
The Houston Ballet’s The Nutcracker runs at the Wortham Theater Center through December 29. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience a timeless tradition that brings the holiday spirit to life.
