Funny Girl at the Hobby Center, Broadway Across America
The touring production of Funny Girl at the Hobby Center is a real treat, packed with talent and classic tunes. Katerina McCrimmon takes the stage as Fanny Brice, delivering a powerhouse vocal performance. Her Brooklyn accent is spot-on, capturing the essence of the original actress and making the role her own. And of course, “Don’t Rain on My Parade” at the end of Act 1 is nothing short of electrifying—it’s pure joy from start to finish. Even the final reprise of this rendition evoked a huge applause from the audience.
McCrimmon’s chemistry with Stephen Mark Lukas, who portrays Fanny's love interest Nick Arnstein, is undeniable. Both actors are not only beautiful people but bring a dynamic energy to the stage. Together, they capture the humor and heartbreak of their complex relationship, despite the fact that time can sometimes feel like it moves rather quickly in the show, compressing months and years into moments. Yet, they make it easy to suspend disbelief, thanks to their convincing performances and connection.
The show’s got a lot going for it: a funny, clever script, memorable 1960s show tunes, and some pretty spectacular set and costume designs. The dialogue is sharp and hilarious, but also tugs at your heartstrings when you least expect it. The slower build-up to Fanny and Nick’s relationship pays off as the show progresses, with plenty of laughs and even a few tear-jerking moments.
Melissa Manchester as Mrs. Brice brings warmth and humor to every scene she’s in, and the supporting cast, including Rodney Thompson and Missy Marion, add solid performances that round out the ensemble.
Visually, the show is a stunner. The set design by David Zinn and costumes by Susan Hilferty create an immersive, nostalgic atmosphere that captures the glitz and glamour of the Ziegfeld Follies. The lighting by Kevin Adams really adds to the emotional beats, making key moments even more impactful.
In the end, Funny Girl is a production filled with heart, laughter, and unforgettable music. If you’re a fan of musical theater, this one’s definitely worth seeing.
Funny Girl is playing at the Hobby Center from August 20 to August 25, 2024, with tickets ranging from $35 to $165.
